Capitularia - Edition of the Frankish Capitularies

New manuscript pages

27.05.2026

This time, our five newly published manuscript pages lead us to the west of the Rhine, where the manuscripts first saw the light of day, all with a single exception back in the ninth century. The first two manuscripts, featuring capitularies issued by Pippin III and Charlemagne, are kept in Laon while the remaining three belong to the monumental collection of the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris:

  • Laon, Bibliothèque municipale, 201
  • Laon, Bibliothèque municipale, 265
  • Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, Lat. 1535
  • Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, Lat. 2826
  • Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, Lat. 11792
  • The capitulary collection in Laon 265 has been of particular interest to us, as witnessed by a two-part blogpost (pt. 1, pt. 2) as well as by another post by our colleague Sven Meeder on the closely related collection in the manuscript Vesoul, Bibliothèque municipale Louis Garret, 79 (73).

Furthermore we have now completely transcribed all capitularies contained in two manuscripts from the Herzog August library in Wolfenbüttel, namely 50.2 Aug. 4° and Cod. Guelf. 299 Gud. Lat. Amongst others, this adds two more copies of two of the most widely transmitted capitularies of Charlemagne to our website, BK 39 and BK 44.
Last but not least did we get the opportunity to check our transcription of Den Haag, Museum Meermanno – Huis van het boek, 10 D 2, an important manuscript for the early capitularies of Charles the Bald, against the original in Den Haag. We would like to express our warmest thanks to Rickey Tax for his generous hospitality!
