Manuscripts

The impressive number of almost 300 extant manuscripts bears witness to the wide dissemination of capitularies across the whole Frankish realm and beyond. In most cases, several capitularies were combined within a single collective manuscript, often in the context of other legal texts.

The information presented on this page is based on the extensive research conducted by the late Hubert Mordek in preparation for his intended new edition of the capitularies, as published in his Bibliotheca capitularium regum Francorum manuscripta (= Mordek 1995). We supplement or modify his survey with new discoveries, additional information or occasional corrections.
